Line: The Moment When Thought Shines
The works of Lebriz Rona, which places the concept of space on the basis of its artistic production, are shaped on the one hand through an infinite coincidence and exchange space, on the other hand, the personal living space, which is understood by belonging and memory, on the other hand, on the abstract boundaries of this concept not associated with any vital code. At this point, her art can be called productions multiplying by tactile proximity and mental distance over space. Rona’s relationship with space not only reveals this concept in its subject matter, but also manifests itself in exhibiting, that is, settling in a space; The question of how to settle in a space necessitates a fundamental dialogue with that space. This time, when we look at the past exhibitions of Lebriz Rona, who held her fourth personal exhibition, we witness that this dialogue has become a matter of aesthetic problem and beyond mental pleasure. In the art of Rona, who has been working on space and the factors surrounding her in her academic career, space is an emotional issue and becomes meaningful with an action; it is an area of awareness that increases with movement.
Lebriz Rona’s exhibition “Preliminary Works”, which will take place on January 8-20, 2018, reveals her relationship with space at the intersection of personal and cultural memory. Rona, who has been looking at both the street and the house from the point where the house and the street are facing each other for the last 1 year, has been thinking about the extinction of a culture that has opened up these two living spaces from a certain interval to each other. The loss of the old, the arrival of the new; The rapid change of the living spaces, and therefore the change in the life experience itself, was a research that Rona’s neighbourhood started in Erenköy and followed all over Istanbul. These preliminary works that give the exhibition its name are actually the products of its on going thinking and the act of putting the thought on the paper. First of all, Lebriz Rona must always work on paper or design it in three dimensions before starting an exhibition or business. This is a more intense working process than can be foreseen, a way of glorifying the work process that extends to what it will show. Preliminary Work of study. Here, 15 pencil drawings that we encounter in this exhibition are born as a preliminary work of the large-scale installation planned by Rona in the future and they are inevitably engraved as images that have declared their independence.
Maybe, the artist, who had a mental exercise with a pencil and a drawing of 29×40 cm with a ruler that accompanied her, as a drawing, opened the pages of that book to the viewer, may be considered an invitation to think together. And perhaps it may also make sense to look at the artist’s preliminary works remotely, to reconsider them from a distance. In addition to all this, as it can be understood from the name Blogspot, this exhibition, which evolved from the internet to the physical exhibition area and thus reveals a naturalness on the place, makes this exhibition not only the finished one, but also the events that occur when the intellectual adventure turns into action. Being in the notebook at the moment when thought shines, opening the layer of thought with the movement of the hand … It is not possible to set a priority here, perhaps, an action that opens up to potentials, both working together: Preliminary work.
In 15 pages shown in the “Preliminary Work” exhibition, we see that Lebriz Rona focuses on some objects facing each other, crossing each other, such as radio, truck, sun umbrella from the street and from home, but what is remarkable is that all the drawings related to them are handled on a single surface. Moreover, some of them have a decorative reproduction: Television, television, television … This approach seems to show us the artist’s desire to keep the memory of iconic elements rather than a descriptive view. Isn’t it an issue of memory to attempt to draw the front facade of a wooden structure perfectly? Rona creates a scene from objects in these drawings; It creates a lost list of a memory space between the house and the street. It all starts with the line. “Preliminary Works” point to an unfinished adventure, but the pages from the book have already declared their freedom.
